A small instrumental record label from Scottsdale, AZ. Five artists tuned to five listening contexts.
01 Label one-sheet
480Studios is a small instrumental record label out of Scottsdale, Arizona. The thesis is one line: music to set the scene, not be the scene. It's made for the people putting in the hours — the deep-work block, the late shift, the practice nobody sees — to make the work something you look forward to rather than dread. Five resident artists, each tuned to a specific listening context — focus, lo-fi/late-night, sleep, meditation, late-night social. The label houses the artists; it doesn't dictate them. Each artist runs its own instrumentation, tempo range, production signature, and visual identity.
The operator, producer, songwriter, and label owner is Chad Michael Smith. Production is AI-assisted instrumental music generated with Suno, mastered through MasterChannel at −16 LUFS integrated and −1 dBTP true peak. AI-assistance is disclosed at every distributor — Spotify, Apple Music, DistroKid — in accordance with platform policy. Every track is auditioned, sequenced, and accepted (or rejected) by a human curator before it ships.
Legally, 480Studios is the recording and publishing brand of Shop480, LLC (Arizona). The same umbrella also houses 480 Natural Light Studio, a production and events studio. Master, publishing, and writer credits on every 480Studios track all sit with Shop480, LLC — see the sync licensing page for the one-stop clearance side of that.
Music to set the scene, not be the scene.
02 Release calendar
The first 480Studios release is live. New releases continue on Fridays through July 3 at a one-release-per-week cadence; thereafter, releases shift to every other week.
03 The five artists
Each artist has its own page at 480studios.com. Short bio is roughly 50 words and reads as one breath. Long bio is roughly 150 words and goes deeper on the sonic and listening-context framing. Both are project-framed — there is no fictional performer; the artist is a defined sonic identity within the label's catalog.
Tepore makes music for the last hour of the day — the hours you wind down alone. Coal-warm pads, distant felt piano, field recordings of rooms just left. Long pieces, no hurry. From 480Studios.
Tepore is the sleep-music project from 480Studios — an instrumental ambient project producing slow-breathing music for the last hour of the day. It's one of four 480Studios artists made for the hours you spend alone (Last Pour is the counterweight, the one for being with people). The palette is coal-warm pads, distant felt piano, river hush, and field recordings of rooms that have just been left. Pieces sit between three and five minutes; long enough to lower the nervous system, short enough not to tip into sound-bath territory (that's Open Cairn's job). The visual identity is interior warmth — amber, ember orange, charcoal black, off-white — and the photography is always close to indoors. No people, no faces. Tepore is a defined sonic identity within 480Studios' catalog; AI-assisted instrumental, mastered for streaming, disclosed at every distributor. Debut album Until Morning (12 tracks) releases June 12, 2026.
Field Office makes music to work to — for the focused hours you spend alone. Felt piano, soft synths, the occasional brushed pulse. Quiet modern classical with the lights on. From 480Studios.
Field Office is the study and focus project from 480Studios — two rooms in the same studio at different hours. In the morning room: quiet modern classical with electronics, felt piano, soft pads, a brushed pulse if any, dry and close and alert. In the after-hours room: downtempo nu-jazz, clean Rhodes electric piano, broken beats, jazz chord voicings, a touch of warmth. Both rooms share a brief — a slightly metabolic floor under deep work, music that holds a tempo without demanding attention. Like Tepore, Sodium Dreams, and Open Cairn, Field Office scores the hours you spend alone; Last Pour is the label's counterweight, the one for being with people. Field Office is a defined sonic identity within 480Studios' catalog; AI-assisted instrumental, mastered for streaming, disclosed at every distributor. Debut EP Morning Desk (9 tracks) released May 22, 2026 as 480Studios' first live release; album Last Building Lit (18 tracks) released June 5, 2026.
Sodium Dreams makes lo-fi instrumentals for the city at night — the late solitary shift. Dusty drums, Rhodes piano, vinyl crackle. Beats from a window above the street. From 480Studios.
Sodium Dreams is the lo-fi project from 480Studios — an instrumental dusty-beats project tuned to late-night city listening, the soundtrack to the late solitary shift. It's one of four 480Studios artists for the hours you spend alone; Last Pour is the counterweight, the one made for being with people. The palette is sodium-yellow streetlamp light: dusty drums, Rhodes electric piano, vinyl crackle, sub-bass, and field recordings from sidewalks and bus shelters. Melancholic by design; warm and worn rather than crisp and bright. The artist sits between instrumental hip-hop and ambient-with-a-beat — if a track feels like it's missing a vocal hook the production has drifted toward hip-hop, and if it feels rhythmless it has drifted toward ambient. Sodium Dreams is a defined sonic identity within 480Studios' catalog; AI-assisted instrumental, mastered for streaming, disclosed at every distributor. Debut album Sodium Hours (14 tracks) is out now.
Open Cairn makes patient drone music for meditation, breathing, and slow yoga — the still hours you keep to yourself. Singing bowls, bowed strings, deep open space. From 480Studios.
Open Cairn is the meditation-music project from 480Studios — an instrumental drone project producing long-form pieces for meditation, breathing practice, and slow yoga. The palette is singing bowls, breath-paced bowed strings, deep open hall reverb, and earth tones (stone gray, moss green, dawn gold, deep forest shadow). The name comes from the practice of cairn-stacking on long hikes; the pieces are intended as containers for the listener's own practice rather than performances to be observed. The label makes no wellness claims — no "healing frequencies," no chakra positioning, no therapeutic promises. Open Cairn is a defined sonic identity within 480Studios' catalog; AI-assisted instrumental, mastered for streaming, disclosed at every distributor. Debut album The High Pass (12 tracks) releases June 19, 2026.
Last Pour makes dark instrumental neo-soul and acid jazz for private late-night rooms — the social side of 480Studios, where the music's made for being with people. Smoky Rhodes, played bass, brushed drums, deep reverb. Music that holds the booth.
Last Pour is the late-night, social project from 480Studios — and the deliberate counterweight to the rest of the catalog. Where the label's other four artists score the hours you spend alone (sleep, work, study, stillness), Last Pour is the one made for being with people: the table where everyone reconvenes once the solitary work is done. The sound is a blend — neo-soul, dark acid jazz, and a tasteful club-banger edge; an old jazz club honoring its roots, but with a great DJ tonight. Smoky Rhodes electric piano, warm played bass, brushed pocket drums, deep hall reverb. No vocals, no buildups, no drops. The room is a dark private members' club after midnight — walnut, burgundy shadows, low-lit tables, the easy quiet of people who came together and have nowhere else to be. Composed and quietly assured: it holds the room without taking it over. AI-assisted instrumental, mastered for streaming, disclosed at every distributor. Debut album The Late Crowd (14 tracks) scheduled for June 26, 2026.
